The Cornice is an amalgamation of the ornate details at Newton house, the porcelain echoes the cracked plasterwork which the crude stars contrast and conflict with.
Named after traditional ceiling roses, this body of work is inspired by the ornate ceilings of Newton house, a National Trust property in the Dinefwr Estate. These ceilings are a mix of eras, styles and imagery, due to the plasterers working with any mould available. There is a humour there, echoed by the fact that the house could not afford to paint these beautiful ceilings and left them starkly white, drawing attention to the craftsmanship of their ornate borders. This fascination with the fluidity and connections between value and desire, is something that is central in my work.

These ceramic vessels are full of contrasts from choice of material, porcelain and crank clay, to the satisfying yet unnerving clash of traditional sprigs mixed in with the pop of hearts and stars. This imagery serves as visual anchors, stretching the work between different time periods. These objects are filled with this tension, both heavy and still, yet delicate and filled with energy.
